President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Stanislav Pozdnyakov commented on an official invitation to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, that fully reinstates the national team, speaking from Moscow, Friday.
“Today we received an invitation signed by the President of the International Olympic Committee, in which the Russian Olympic Committee is invited to take part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo,” Pozdnyakov confirmed.
All the restrictions which the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has imposed on the Russian athletes are now lifted. According to Pozdnyakov, the Russian Olympic team will be able to perform as such with all the attributes, including the Russian flag. “This applies, I empathise, to all sportsmen, without exception, including our athletes: regardless of their status,” the ROC chief highlighted.
He also mentioned the Russian Athletic Federation (RusAF), whose membership in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is still suspended. “We are working very closely with the RusAF, so that the Federation will reinstate their status as soon as possible,” Pozdnyakov hoped.
In 2017, the IOC suspended the ROC’s membership following an investigation into alleged Russian state-sponsored doping at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
The IOC ruled later that only "clean" athletes were to compete under the neutral 'Olympic Athlete from Russia' (OAR) flag during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018.
