Why You (Don’t) Want Tenure - Advantages And Disadvantages Of Tenure At A Research University

Why You (Don’t) Want Tenure - Advantages And Disadvantages Of Tenure At A Research University First of all, let me point out that I'm absolutely grateful for getting tenure at my institution. This vlog is a no-nonsense discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of tenure, and is intended to help people out that are thinking of getting a PhD or becoming a professor.

What are the advantages of tenure?

Greater academic freedom. You have a mild amount more academic freedom to allow you to choose larger or more riskier projects.
You don’t have to move. You can stay put at your institution if you choose. If you don't get tenure that means you have to change to a different university.
It is a demonstration that you are moderately well known. Getting tenure shows that you have a moderate amount of recognition within the academic community.

What are the disadvantages of tenure?

You will be asked to do more service roles at the university. Service means that you have to take more leadership roles in running the university. You might have to interact more with industry, news-reporters, and the community.
You are likely going to have to teach more often. Most departments shift teaching requirements away from junior faculty towards mid-level faculty to help them get tenure.
Your moderate amount of recognition does come with increased responsibility to do the right thing.
As a leader at the university, you will have to take responsibility for problems and decisions around you.
Very few people outside of academia even knows what tenure means, and you might be brought down a few ‘levels.’
You might also get complacent by reducing the possibility of losses.
You are likely to have some sort of identity crisis, and you will have to redefine yourself as a person.

In general, you will have less time for research, increased responsibilities, and a change in your identity that you may not want.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.

Peer proofreading and editing platform

A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.

The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
