American Bandstand 1967 -Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming To The Canyon), The Mamas & the Papas

American Bandstand 1967 -Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming To The Canyon), The Mamas & the Papas Airdate: September 30, 1967

One of the Mamas & the Papas final hits, “Twelve Thirty” is at #23 today after peaking at #20 two weeks ago. Last Sunday (Sept. 24) on “The Ed Sullivan Show”, the Mamas and the Papas appeared for their last time together on television and sang this song.

The song was written by John Phillips shortly after the group moved to Southern California in 1965. The canyon referred to was inspired by Laurel Canyon, which is just north of Hollywood. (But “young girls” should avoid coming to Benedict Canyon, just west of Laurel Canyon……especially on Cielo Drive around early August of 1969 😉 )

The young girls (and boys) dancing today are: Maureen Cohen (0:32), Deedra Higgins (1:36), Roni Menacker (1:39), Deedee Del Campos (2:11), Lauren Montgomery (2:18), Leonard Smith & Theodosia Dayton (2:22), Famous Hooks & Jenny Nichols (2:27) with Mike Langham, Robin Morris and Pat Dickinson behind them also at 2:27, and on the riser it’s Jim Miranda & Debbie Kane and Forest Hutchins & Robin Miller (best seen at 0:47)

Sorry the song was cut short (I really like this song). This segment came from the end of the episode (after they had shown the Bathing Beauty contestants) and, as usual, they were pressed for time and cut the song to go to commercial.

Thanks for watching!!!
