YC Library's Distinguished Guest Lecture Series, Sept 4, 2019 How should we live? This is the central question of ethics. In trying to learn how to live well, we must also take into consideration developments from both science and medicine. Yet, it’s unclear as to what counts as either ethical science or ethical medicine. In particular, science seems to not be concerned with values of rightness or wrongness—these are generally thought to be humanistic values and not scientific values. Furthermore, it’s not clear to what extent medicine’s aim should be to conduct research or benefit patients. For these reasons, there is room to discuss the extent to which philosophy and ethics, more specifically, can assist both scientific and medical developments.
