Patients would usually sound it at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital after their radiotherapy. But the bell was removed over fears about the impact the noise had on those still being treated. A hospital spokesman said: “We recognise that patients who are still receiving treatment can find it upsetting.” Bosses are now launching a consultation with staff and patients to decide the bell’s future. The ceremonies came from the US and are in about 200 UK hospitals. They have been called “divisive” by some incurable patients. Jo Taylor, 50, has had more than 80 rounds of chemotherapy since 2007. She said: “For those of us with little prospect of being cured, hearing this bell is like a kick in the teeth. “People think it’s encouraging to have a bell. “I think it’s divisive and cruel.” GOT a story?
