No, 20% of Your Oxygen is Not from the Amazon Rainforest

No, 20% of Your Oxygen is Not from the Amazon Rainforest #TheAmazon is on fire, and you should be worried, but not for the reason people are saying.

Oxygen is 21% of our atmosphere. O2 comprises billions of metric tons around the whole planet and we use a very, very small part of that. Yes, oxygen is a non-renewable resource and YES the amazon rainforest fire will affect how much oxygen is made each day, month, and year, but that’s not the worrying part. Brazil’s amazon fires are much more worrying than that. They’re clearing the land to graze cattle, mine, and drill, none of those things soak up carbon dioxide and instead, they produce it. This can cause a climate crisis. So, even though you’ll still be able to breathe for 1000s of years it might be too hot thanks to #globalwarming.

Hopefully, knowing the value of forests in Earth's carbon cycle will help us all value them even more. Fight deforestation!! Plant a tree! 🌲🌳🌴🌾

This Newsweek article jumped right on this exact question almost as soon as I did!

How much do the oceans add?

Here is that simply amazing paper on the global oxygen budget

How the rainforest can be better used as a carbon sink and the fears around deforestation.

That bit where I said, I couldn’t “find a solid source” here is the oft cited book and though I looked through it, I couldn’t find the exact data — which is why I pointed out it’s not really worth taking stock in those stats.

And finally, read more about the rainforest, because forests are just awesome.

~~~~~ 🐣 EASTER EGGS FOR READERS 🐣 ~~~~~
P.S — FYI: the burning isn’t JUST Brazil’s (or more specifically the Brazilian president and his corporate partners). The Amazon is within the borders of nine countries. Bolivia is also experiencing fires; Brazil is just burning MORE. And, the Amazonian fires in Brazil have been set to clear the land for cattle grazing. Which is a bit of a short term benefit with very little in the long term.
P.P.S — Just like with oxygen, the Amazon CREATES its weather as much as it benefits from it. As we humans destroy the trees, we are also likely destroying the engine of the rain that makes the land arable in the first place, drying the region as a whole, and likely compounding this new fire problem.
