Season X just came to an end via a dramatic event that ended with the player sucked into the rift above Loot Lake before everything in-game turned to a single image of a black hole: you can't start matches right now, or do anything at all. We're just looking at a black hole until we figure out what's happening next. The Epic Games launcher does not yet seem to be downloading a new update, at least on my PC. That might change soon because the event just ended moments ago.
I tried exiting and coming back in to see what would happen, and my game hung at the login screen before asking me for my username and password. So I think it's fair to call the game down right now, though it's clearly intentional.
The length of the downtime is currently unknown, though the downtime that begins a season usually lasts something around 2 hours. But this is a different beast: we're getting a host of massive changes, likely including a new map and new UI in addition to the usual start of season changes. That might mean a longer downtime than with previous seasons, though it's a bit of a question mark at this point. The best thing to do is to keep an eye on the new official Fortnite Status twitter account, or just to stare down the Epic Games launcher to see what's going to happen.
There's mystery in the game right now, which is what we like to have. What happens next: I have no idea.
