Art Colours for Beginners - Strokes of Style 8

Art Colours for Beginners - Strokes of Style 8 Strokes of Style Episode 8: art colour for beginners a multi series to help you define your art.

One of the primary things which induces emotion is caused by colors, a blue sky can be relaxing, a campfire can do the same with its red and yellow dancing rhythm giving an energetic and joyful vibe to it - in contrast to an uncontrolled fire which ofcourse can be very dangerous, but green leaves for example have an ambient feeling giving a regenerative and healing effect. You may have noticed that a heart is red because it has this association with romance, most healthcare logos are green, female orientated product are pink, high impact and powerful companies such as adidas, nike, apple and disney are black. Well its because all colours have a meaning, and they have multiple, depending on the context. Lets zoom in for characters, if you see a business man in a black suit with a red tie, he resembles power and strength, if you see him in a pink suit with a yellow tie, you see him differently... maybe a calm happy person, but not necessarily powerful. Why are most wedding dresses white? it stands for peace, purity and cleanness. here is an overview of different colours, pause it if you want to know a specific one. Ok now we know that each colour has its own definition depending on the setting - it doesn't mean it always looks good - lets focus on the basic of colour theorie. We have primary colors, red yellow blue, secondary colors, green purple and orange, tertiary colors these are the in between, such as yellow and orange, or red and orange, both giving a brownish flavour.

Colour theorie is basically what happens if you mix two primary yellow and red, you get a secondary, orange. What happens if you mix secondary orange and a primary red? you get a tertiary dark brow brown.. switch red for yellow with orange, you get a lighter brown. For each color there is a combination of the shift of ratio. The contrast can be increased with black and white, add more black, the darker it gets and more white the lighter. Now mixing is one thing, there is another level to it, complimentary colours. These are colours such as blue and orange, they are opposites, when put together they are there own black and white. A blue iris with orange dots gives this very focused part where the observers are drawn to. Give the person red brown hair and they pop out even more.

There are also analogous colours, these are three adjacent colors from the colour wheel which can help each other, depending on the contrast.
What is important though always keep in mind what contrast level you use for your art.

You can apply color in character design by popping out certain aspects, giving a them a great color scheme for there context with a . FOr example an overlord, with black armour with red features and yellow eyes. But you can do something interesting as giving it the opposite colors as well such as purple and green and light blue. Understanding these principles can help you a lot with designing.

To summarize: all colors have meaning depending on the situational context they are in, Getting a sense of color theory can give you a deeper understanding why to use certain colors, choosing a color palette with the right contrast can make or break a an illustration or character depending on your goal.
