On Monday NASA announced that it had confirmed the impact site of India's Vikram Lunar Lander after a 3 month search and a lot of help by Shan Subramanian, an engineer in Chennai who spent his personal time analyzing data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. It was long known that the lander had crashed based on radio data from amateur astronomers, but unclear statements from the press had lead many to believe the lander was intact. NASA's new images show fragments spread over several square kilometers showing that there was never a chance of recovering the probe after the software glitch caused a navigation error.
