There are a lot of significant dates in my life but this man, Joey Calogero, was there for and witnessed firsthand the day that I nearly lost my life and that completely changed everything for me forever. ●
He didn't actually just witness it, after suffering my spinal cord injury and lying limp and helpless in the water, Joey was the one who realized something was drastically wrong and pulled my motionless body out of the water and up onto the beach. If not for him seeing me and taking action quickly, I very well would have drowned and lost my life on that day.

While having him strapped into the chair for our chat, Joey and I acknowledge that we've never had a complete and thorough talk about his perspective of that day and what kind of impact it had on his life. During our sit down, Joey presents me with the actual skim board from the day of my accident, we go over what exactly he remembers, how that experience paved his way to becoming a firefighter and ultimately how those events have impacted his life and shaped his current perspective.

Paralyze This is an interview series where I’ll be chatting up and altering the perspectives of those with an ambitious goal oriented story as well as a killer positive mentality and approach to life, all while having them completely strapped into one of my old wheelchairs and unable to voluntarily move on their own. The goal being to impose even the slightest sensation of paralysis and give a short glimpse into the reality of someone living in a similar situation with a physical disability.
