India's National Population Register to collect date, place of birth of both parents: Report

Members of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government did not foresee the outrage against a new citizenship law, and it is now scrambling to do damage control. Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets to protest the law, which offers non-Muslim immigrants an easier path to citizenship. It was also reported that the National Population Register will now require people to declare date and place of birth of both their parents. Critics said this can be used by the government to weed out people deemed to be non-citizens.
