James Bond Gave Sam Mendes the Confidence to Make '1917' | 1917 Interview | Rotten Tomatoes Though his career behind the camera includes such monumental achievements as Best Picture-winner 'American Beauty' and a pair of James Bond films, Sam Mendes faced two unique challenges in making his latest film, '1917.' First, it's his screenwriting debut, working alongside co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, and second, the film is presented as a single unbroken shot, stitched together from cleverly choreographed long takes to create a cohesive story. Ahead of its release, Mendes, Wilson-Cairns, and stars George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman sat down with RT to talk about the new film, how its one-take format presented unforeseen challenges, and what it was like to work on such a personal film. Plus, Mendes explains how his work on the Bond franchise directly inspired the creation of '1917' and motivated him to make it.
