Members of the Andhra Pradesh Voluntary Health Workers union (ASHA) staged a dharna outside the District Medical and Health Officer’s office on December 23. Workers were seen demanding the release of their pending wages in Visakhapatnam. Hundreds of ASHA female volunteers sat on a dharna under the presence of police personnel. ASHA volunteers are trained community health workers, who work under several government schemes. Volunteers receive payment of as low as Rs 7,000 as an honorarium, not a salary.
