The number of tourists to S. Korea reaches a new record high. What’s in store for S. Korea’s tourism industry?

The number of foreign tourists to South Korea hit a new record high. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization estimated that the number of foreign tourists to South Korea reached 17.5 million in 2019. Among the factors that propelled the number of tourists was the popularity of K-pop. According to a survey of some 10,000 K-pop fans overseas, nine out of 10 expressed their desire to visit South Korea. The revitalization of the tourism industry has a positive impact on the nation’s economy, including the creations of jobs and the revitalization of the local economy. However, some tourist sites are suffering from the side effects of "overtourism" which has led to a decline in the quality of life of residents. This week’s Foreign Correspondents will discuss the status and future of South Korea’s tourism industry.

한국 관광 산업의 미래는?

한국을 찾은 외국인 관광객의 수가 역대 최대치를 기록했다. 문화체육관광부와 한국관광공사는 2019년 방한 외국인 관광객의 수가 1750만 명에 이른다고 추산했다. 관광객 수의 증가에 영향을 미친 요인 중에는 ‘케이팝의 인기’도 포함됐다. K-pop 팬 1만여 명을 조사한 결과, 10명 중 9명은 한국을 방문하고 싶다는 의사를 밝혔다. ‘굴뚝 없는 산업’으로 불리는 관광 산업이 활성화되면 일자리 증가, 지역경제 활성화 등 국가 경제에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다. 그러나 일부 관광지에선 ‘오버투어리즘’으로 인해 거주민들의 삶의 질이 저하되는 부작용을 겪기도 하는데... 이번 주 에선 한국 관광 산업의 현황과 미래를 주제로 다양한 이야기를 나눠본다.
