(30 Dec 2019) New York Mayor Bill de Blasio attended a menorah lighting in Brooklyn on Sunday as another Jewish community less than 40 miles away grappled with a stabbing attack at a Hanukkah celebration which injured five people. "This holiday is when light triumphs over evil. And everyone, right now we see people attacking this community and we will not stand for it," de Blasio said.
A man stabbed five people as they gathered to celebrate Hanukkah at a rabbi's home in an Orthodox Jewish community north of New York on Saturday evening.
This past week in New York City itself, police have received at least six reports — eight since December 13 — of attacks possibly motivated by anti-Jewish bias.
De Blasio has said police presence would increase in Brooklyn neighbourhoods home to large Jewish populations.
