Pelosi: Justice Department's Roger Stone Intervention an 'Abuse of Power'

Pelosi: Justice Department's Roger Stone Intervention an 'Abuse of Power' House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the Department of Justice getting involved in the sentencing in the Roger Stone case is "an abuse of power."

"The president is again trying to manipulate federal law enforcement to serve his political interests," said Pelosi.

"He thinks he's above the law. He has no respect for the rule. But where are the Republicans to speak out on this blatant violation of the rule of law? A.G. Barr has deeply damaged the rule of law by withdrawing the DOJ sentencing recommendation and the act of interference."

Pelosi's comments come after President Donald Trump vented on Twitter this week about federal prosecutors recommending up to nine years in federal prison for his confidant Roger Stone, the Justice Department abruptly announced that it would reevaluate the recommended sentence.

Justice officials insisted the timing was coincidental; they'd already been planning to pull the recommendation.

Stone was convicted in November of tampering with a witness and obstructing the House investigation into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia to tip the 2016 election.

The Justice Department move to back away from the sentencing recommendation prompted the four attorneys who prosecuted Stone to quit the case.

One left the Justice Department altogether.

Pelosi also talked about the bipartisan resolution limiting President Donald Trump's authority to launch military operations against Iran that is moving toward approval in the Senate and a similar measure is expected to be voted on in the House.
