And viewers watching the National Television Awards couldn’t help but notice that the pair had a rather frosty interaction while on stage accepting the award for live magazine programme. As Holly Willoughby began her speech thanking viewers for tuning in to This Morning, Ruth, 59, was seen standing next to Phil, 57, when they made eye contact and awkwardly looked away. Ruth then gave a wink, although it’s unclear if she was winking at Phil, who then put an arm around his colleague. After Phil thanked the I team for making the show what it is, he turned to Ruth and Eamonn Holmes and said: ‘Your Fridays are fantastic, we love you so much. You should say something too, I think.’ Ruth looked ahead with a rather forced smile and said ‘thank you, thank you’ – and viewers couldn’t help but notice some tension. The awkwardness was so palpable that Piers Morgan – who was peeved over This Morning winning anyway – had to mock the moment on today’s edition of Good Morning Britain. He said: ‘‘The best bit of that was when Phil got Ruth to say a few words on the stage, awks. Hashtag awks. ‘That’s the kind of wink Michael Corleone gives Fredo – “I know it was you!”’ Last month, it was claimed that multiple This Morning presenters had made complaints about Schofield, including Ruth. However, I denied the claims. A spokesperson for I said: ‘It’s deeply disappointing and unfair for Phillip to be the target of this sort of malicious gossip. Phillip is a much-respected broadcaster and colleague and this is absolutely not a description of This Morning that we recognise. ‘Holly and Phil are great friends both on and off-screen and are popular among viewers and colleagues alike.’ Martin Frizell, Editor of This Morning added: ‘I spend hundreds of days a year in their company and what you see is what you get, a genuine friendship from a couple who are both spontaneously funny and professional. We have the smartest viewers watching telly and believe me, they would be the first to notice any issues – they haven’t because there are none.’ Despite the speculation about his and Ruth’s relationship, it seems Phil was having a whale of a time as This Morning won at the NTAs for the 10th year on the trot. The team – including Ruth – gathered for a selfie in the lift, while Phil shared a picture with his co-host Holly, 38, with their award, captioning it : ‘#NTA 2020 with my girl.’ Got
