In a bid to curb electricity theft, Odisha will soon be opting for smart pre-paid electricity meters system. Odisha Government is mulling over introducing smart meters which will curb electricity thefts and will help in proper revenue generation. Initially, the project will be implemented on a pilot basis in Rourkela and Sambalpur and will be replicated after the success. This system is already in place in several other cities of the country. Electricity meters with Pre-paid cards will also be introduced to do away with billing counter queues. The Government has however, assured that the shift will not result in change in tariff.
