Great Minds: The Brain in Medicine, Surgery and Psychiatry

Great Minds: The Brain in Medicine, Surgery and Psychiatry 2019 marks the 140th anniversary of the first successful brain tumour operation performed by Glasgow surgeon, William Macewen. Our exhibition explores the ground-breaking work of Macewen and delves deeper into the history of our understanding of the brain - from research and treatments to the amazing advances in surgical operations. We also take a look at how our approach to mental health and wellbeing has changed over the centuries.

The exhibition also features some work from our ongoing Visualising Medical Heritage project to help to bring the collections to life and to demonstrate exactly how some of these pioneering pieces of technology actually worked.
