President Rodrigo Roa Duterte inspected the decommissioned firearms and the decommissioning process area as he attended the second phase launching of the decommissioning of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) combatants and weapons at the Old Capitol Compound in Barangay Simuay, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao.

The President, together with key government and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) officials, witnessed the simulation of the decommissioning process undertaken by the MILF combatants through the facilitation of the Independent Decommissioning Body (IDB) staff in Stations 1-5 of the decommissioning process area.

Created by the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the IDB’s primary task is to oversee the decommissioning of the MILF combatants and weapons.

In the same event, the President led the awarding of PhP100,000 cash assistance to the five (5) decommissioned MILF combatants.

The Chief Executive, in his message, acknowledged the efforts of the key agencies that worked tirelessly to end the hostilities between the GPH and the MILF.

“I take pride in the fact that we have made significant progress in the implementation of the agreements arising from the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro, including the very important Annex on Normalization that covers the decommissioning process. This is indeed a huge step towards our goal of achieving lasting peace for Mindanao,” President Duterte said.

He also assured the combatants that the GPH would assist them as they reintegrate into society and enjoy productive civilian lives.

“Let us celebrate this milestone, confident that we have started building a better and brighter future for our nation where every Filipino – regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion, or ideological leanings – will have a chance to live in peace, prosperity, harmony with one another,” President Duterte said.
