Storms sweep across parts of LI, prompting brief tornado warning

Storms sweep across parts of LI, prompting brief tornado warning Severe storms are sweeping across parts of Long Island this evening, packing the potential for damaging wind gusts.

A tornado warning was issued for part of eastern Suffolk County Monday evening, but the warning has since expired after the cell that prompted the warning weakened.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were also issued for parts of Suffolk, but have also expired.

And photos and videos posted sent into News 12 Long Island showed a waterspout over the waters south of Fire Island. News 12 meteorologists say it was the same cell that prompted a tornado warning when it pushed north over Suffolk.

News 12 meteorologists say scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to hang around the Island this Labor Day afternoon, and will continue into the evening. Some storms may be severe with lightning, heavy rain and gusty winds.

Any showers and storms will wrap up before midnight, with gradually clearing skies overnight. Lows will be around 64 degrees.

It's better for Tuesday, with mostly sunny skies on tap with highs in the upper-70s and low humidity.

And News 12 meteorologists are continuing to monitor Hurricane Dorian. The storm's remnants could approach the area later in the week, bringing a chance of coastal flooding and dangerous surf along the shore.
