And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand. 2 And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him. 3 And he said unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth. 4 And he said unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace. 5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he said unto the man, Stretch forth your hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other. Mark 3:1-5 (KJV)
Vrs.1-2 The Pharisees (The Religious leaders, God representatives) and they could care less about the man with the withered hand? All they cared about was trapping Jesus and a having a reason to kill him?
Vrs 3-5 How important was his hand? Jesus asked them a question is it lawful to do this good thing, to heal this man. They did not answer yes or no, just a blank “How dare you question us”?
Ever ask someone a question and they just stand there with a dumb stare, they know the correct answer but refuse to acknowledge the truth.
When they refused to answer, He looked at them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts,
I can’t imagine ever wanting Jesus to look at me with anger, He could whisper and you would be vaporized.
The problem was the Pharisees loved being in charge, they loved power over the people.
What they refused to do was humble themselves and drew near to God so He could soften their hearts.
So Jesus had love and compassion for this man and He healed him, and what was the result?
The Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him. Mark 3:6 (KJV)
The moral of this story,
Don’t claim to be religious a Christian, a representative of God, and not be in the process of admitting your shortcomings, and drawing closer to God.
Having your Love for God and Man increase, daily.
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. James 4:8-10 (KJV)
This is exactly what the Pharisees refused to do, because they were as close to God as they wanted to be.
Remember, if you are not moving forward, then you are as close to God as you want to be.
