The shop was named, 50 years ago, after the lead track on the first album by US 1960s group Spirit.
Fresh Garbage first opened its doors in Bank Street in 1969 and has been a Mecca for a rather 'rebellious' youth culture ever since. It is renowned for being at the cutting edge of alternative fashion and street fashion.
Fresh Garbage happily started serving an assortment of hippies, mods, rockers, punks, skinheads, goths and Belfast students through the late 60’s, early 70’s. It survived the Troubles until 1985 when it relocated to Rosemary Street.
Fresh Garbage is still proud of being a family run business that has stayed true to its roots. Started by Glens of Antrim girl Geraldine Lynn and later aided and abetted by her husband Turlough Birch, the shop is now run by the couple's two sons James and Michael ably cheered on by James's wife Alanna.
This shop really does have something alternative for everybody and the heady mix of incense and music make any visit an experience. Specialising in rock tee shirts and merchandise, belts, silver and jewellery, body jewellery, hippy/punk/goth clothing and accessories, incense, scarves, sun glasses, wallets, make-up, perfumes, ornaments, and anything else that is judged necessary for an alternative lifestyle!
There is simply no other clothes shop like it in Belfast! When you walk through the door expect the unexpected! So if you still fancy yourself as a 'Dedicated follower of fashion', this might be the place for you!
