The British Museum's bid to make classicist Mary Beard a trustee was rejected by Number 10 because of her pro-European views, it is claimed. It is understood the 65-year-old was turned down last year at the end of former prime minister Theresa May's time in office. Whitehall sources said that when the museum asked why she had not been approved, the government said it did not appreciate her pro-EU remarks made on social media, according to The Observer.
