How do you determine what to give to Caesar and what you owe to God? No one in the world seems to wrestle with what belongs to Caesar and what belongs to God. It isn’t even a controversy. Of course you are obligated to pay taxes to Caesar. Everyone knows that. But if this question is so easy to answer today, why did the spies who tried to trap Jesus marvel at His answer? Why were they silent after He responded? When you hear “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s,” your own heart will determine who you need to render to.
This passage sets apart those who are in the world from those who have been called out of the world. Those who are working for money see the obligation they owe to Caesar. Those who are working for God see their obligation to render to God.
For truly no man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Matthew 6:24
